A freakish whipping accident?

So I tried making whipped cream this morning and I think I ended up with er!:( None the less...we ate it. LoL So how do you make perfect whipped cream? I think I went wrong by adding the sugar first ( by the way I made like a sugar syrup so I wouldn't have sugar particles). It ended up looking like rotten milk...it like separated and had a milky substance on the bottom, so I drained it! lol please tell me what I did wrong..
